It was a Filipino woman driving and she ended up against the curb, further over on my side of the road than I was. We waited for the cops. I remember I was asked if I had insurance and I said no, and her eyes lit up, like now I did not count and she was not responsible. I said, "Doesn't matter - it's not my fault". She didn't have a mark on that tank of a Buick Riviera, but it totaled my car. Was not that much damage, but got the radiator and they explained to me it was not worth fixing, so they gave me a check. Might have been one of the first rains of the fall when the streets were particularly slick.
I had to buy another car. Think it was the advertiser I found one, another Opel.
There was a slight problem. The engine made a terrible noise. The seller lived
in the Excelsior. He was maybe about fifty and had been a house painter - fell off a ladder and was in constant pain, and on the strongest aspirin all the time. I asked him if he had ever been to a chiropractor? He said the last thing he would ever do is see a charlatan. He was one of those conservative types who took pride in never-ever. In fact he defined himself by never. Not sure about the availability of surgery for him, but he seemed to take pride in his pain and give
it purpose by defending it against shysters. Rather the pain - than give in to
reprobate malefactors, the source of all evil in the world. Now me - I would try something, any or all things, rather than endure the pain, which is one of the reasons I became a relativist rather than a defender of absolutes and the
decimation of options.
