After Sonoma moved back to San Francisco, I moved to Santa Rosa renting a room near the Fair Grounds. The big event of the summer between my first and second years in Santa Rosa was the Olympics. I had no television in those days and so did not even know about them until a neighbor informed me.
He lived in a long two story apartment complex which was next to the house I was living. He had me come over to see Nadia. It was the 1976 Summer Olympics and Nadia scored the first ten in history and six more 10s. It was quite an event of the time and everybody was talking about it. Thanks to this guy, I got to see Nadia.
I took summer classes to qualify for the VA funds in the summer. Took Phy to a day care, unfortunately a Christian enterprise, the only one I could get into. Phy was not used to this kind of discipline for the sake of Christ's perfection. But he got through it. I took a swimming class as a half credit to fill out my accreditation. It was an eight o'clock class, foggy and cold and I being so thin, I froze every morning at the outdoor pool.
The interesting thing here was I was awarded a life saving degree on the last day of swimming class. Coincidentally Phy and I went to Spring Lake in the afternoon to take him swimming. It was still bitterly cold but crowded. I was standing knee deep in the water facing the shore watching Phy when a woman ran by me into the lake with a terrified look on her face. I turned around and saw a hand going down about forty yards out. I took off.
