These were old four engine B52 transport planes, hauling stuff from Hawaii to Vietnam. He talked a lot about island hoping, meaning when an engine went out, they would pump the fuel from one side of the plane to the other, to keep
the plane flying even, with one engine gone until they could get to the next
island airport. Said sometimes they even lost two engines, but these planes were so great, they could always limp them into the next landing. They took a couple of dozen Green Berets into somewhere or other in Vietnam, and then went back to pick them up some weeks later. There were only three left; the rest had been killed.
One of his passengers on one of his trips, a Special Forces dragoon, told him they had killed everyone in a village. My friend says, you killed the woman and children? He replied: "Gooks". His best story was that they flew into some northern city in South Vietnam maybe Da Nang. They unloaded their supplies under fire, and when taking off they blew an engine. They had to park it and pull the engine. And the whole time the base was under fire. They had to wait for another engine to come from Japan, and when it did they had to install it under fire. As they were taking off, this new engine blew also. They had to do it all over again, and all under fire.
I think it was the second summer up
Saint Helena I got in big trouble. Sonoma left me and moved back to San Francisco. She of course took Phy with her. I had been bad and cheated on her.
