Hainesville consisted of a Texaco gas station, tiny store, a school, courthouse and if one didn't stop behind the line at the stop sign, went straight to the courthouse if the cop was hiding behind the school. And it could have been the Gurnnee cops - they were going out on state toll road 94 and giving tickets, until the state troopers caught them and put the their squad cars up on blocks.
The gas ball cop came after me after dark and I drove faster down hill with a bit of a dip and turned left into main street Song Lake over the train tracks, right and quick left again down the dark tree lined Decora Avenue with my lights out and reached the curve about three blocks difference. I used the emergency brake so no brake lights would show, made another quick left and lost him just like on TV or in the movies.
I ran with blue lights for awhile about six bulbs stretched across and behind my chrome tube front grill on the '57 Chevy, but it was illegal. Up in Lake Geneva Wisconsin one time a cop made-me with tools from my trunk take them out right on a main street in town one summer evening. After that I installed an on/off switch under the dash. Passed a cop going the other way once, at night going to Waukegan with blue lights on. He did a quick Uturn and came after us and red-lighted me. As was our custom in those days, we jumped out of the car to give him the license so he didn't have to get up. But he wanted to look at the front of the car which he did but I had shut the blue lights off. He looked but didn't say anything and let us go.
