There was a guy in Round Lake who had a car that was faster than the police had and he liked to speed say late on Saturday night past where they might be parked, to get them to chase him, because they never could catch him and there were no police radios in those days. But there was one crazy guy and one hears these stories and perhaps doesn't believe them, but it happened to me so I know it was true. It was narrow two lane black-top, a shortcut between Venetian Village where I now lived and Round Lake where I would visit friends still back over there. I had the Pontiac or the 409 and was driving home one night to V Village, when on a flat straight away a car came at me lights-out -
down the center of the road at high speed and I had to hit the ditch or head-on it be. It's kind of a game of chicken I thought in the brief few seconds I had to consider it. Later I asked around about this guy and people had heard of it. Oh I wanted to get him and thought, make a remote controlled car and send it down the middle of the road driverless.
It was a long straight gravel road. It was winter time. The road was snow and ice covered slick. Dickie wanted us to drag him behind the car, he on a toboggan with a long rope. The toboggan was a flat long narrow piece of wood with the front curled around one-hundred and ninety degrees. I drove the '57 Chev and we hooked it all up on a cold sunny January day probably a Saturday.
