For instance I saw a woman step off a curb from a crowd, and a car came around the corner really fast and missed her by a whisker. I felt what she felt. I could feel her realization that she had almost been hit, as it passed over her and dissipated, as her friends who had not noticed began to talk to her - oblivious. In fact her and I were the only ones who perceived the possible near-death experience. I wondered how long that brush with death would last, and would it have any affect on her life.

Of course my experience would have to be completely random, since otherwise the selection of experience would tend to support what I already knew and would recognize, as opposed to what I did not. I would need real experience to answer most of my questions. In the mean-time, I decided I needed operating principles as concepts for decision making in the immediate present. These would be tentative and subject to change based on information as acquired.

On my journeys into Waukegan mostly to go to book stores, I began to walk around a little. It was my first experience walking about since I was a kid. On a sunny weekday morning I went out part way on a stone pier that went out into Lake Michigan. There was a woman sitting there and I did something I had never done before. I got up the nerve to talk to her. We wound up going to her apartment and having sex. It turned out to be something of a problem. She was married and her husband was at work at Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Now I'm thinking this guy could walk in on us at any minute, and shoot me if I was lucky. We agreed that I would come again next week on something like a Tuesday evening at eight PM.
