Co-option was how the Symbionese Liberation Army became bank robbers and there became a debate about it. By this logic it is OK to steal for a good cause, so long as you steal from the bad guys or from those who do not have a proper appreciation for what is it is that betters might then steal. Expropriation for the better cause. And heard some years later that some of these same radical co-opters ended up working on the Alaska pipeline, considered an environmental nightmare at the time. How ironic I thought.
I was interested in politics. When I discussed this with other art students at that time, I was always told not to mess with politics. I was discovering in my travels through life, that for every endeavor, there were varying psychologies which must be adopted. Co-option was one of the tenants of the revolutionary, fighting the all powerful. While I easily understood the concept it was not exactly one I was comfortable with. Eventually I got co-opted, and in this instance lost a pretty good friend. Some little time after MaryT had left, her brother showed up. He was living down on Montezuma Street a short distance away. We were smoking dope then and at some point a bunch of us arranged to get some pretty good stuff, which was going to be shared by a number of people. I told Marko and SusieQ where I had hidden it under the house. They co-opted it. Not that they didn't offer it back, as I remember, but it came back a great deal short. That was the last straw for some of my friends, and for instance MaryT's brother disappeared after that into the void, just like his sister had done.
