Stories

It was a two week trip but that is another story. Almost immediately on getting back, I began to slip into the episode.

There was a series of events that produced a certain logic. On arriving home I was told by my family that there was a big deal just over the hill at a Church on Folsom Street. My family insisted I go in the evening just at dark and took me over. It was quite the thing. Crowds of people were standing on the side-walks and in the street looking at the church facade trying to see whatever iconic image, probably Mary Magdalene somewhere on the Church facade, which was just a painted wall. Some would see it and some would not including myself, like one of those trick pictures you had to look at in certain way that were popular some years ago. Now those I could do. It was a day or two later that the Hare Krishnas showed up in the street outside the house and were chanting for an hour or so. Now they may have been chanting to the city viewed from there, but I took it they were chanting for me. So the logic begins to build. One creates an interpretive context in which one is the center of everything that happens.

Shortly thereafter that first weekend home, I had to go to the store, the Safeway down at Mission and Thirtieth. I had a feeling it was going to be something and I was afraid to go really, and it was as I expected. The parking lot was full of limousines parked, driving around and a lot of seemingly rich people everywhere. People talking on phones in the store before there were cell phones.
