I remember the reflection pool froze and I wished I had my ice skates. And I did have my skates probably brought from Christmas leave home. The ice was never strong enough on the pool but I did go to my first private rink at a hotel and thought I was a hot shot until a real professional came onto the ice, and he tore me to shreds with jumps and spins, probably paid by the hotel to entertain the crowd with real ice skating, a young guy heart-throb and embarrass me.

At some point that winter Johnson was inaugurated president. And I went to the parade with sharp shooters on the roof tops, and was quite close when his closed black limousine went by, looking like the Mafia. How could one tell the difference ? Murder incorporated Viet Nam.

In the spring I found that I could walk along the river's edge very prettily over-grown with a rough path of sorts, hop skip and a jump down to the Arlington Memorial Bridge where I could walk over to the Reflecting Pool, or mosey up thru George Washington University, hardly detectable amongst the houses and tree lined streets, a very sounds of Simon & Garfunkel - feeling America.

But that spring perhaps in April early May the post office and some other of the clerks got together and convinced the Major to requisition some bikes, and they would be lenders and anybody could check out a bike like a book from a library and go riding. So that is what I did, check out a bike every day and ride over to DC.
