The job of the Duty Roster Clerk was to make a monthly duty roster, print and post it. Then he spent the rest of his time changing it. When somebody couldn't perform, the Duty Roster Clerk had to call around to find substitutes and arrange a switch. Can't remember how I learned about an unused blackboard somewhere on base. But I do remember going over there on my bike and talking to a lady about it. She said there was a large blackboard in the basement and I could have it, four feet high and six feet wide. Somehow one can do these sort of things when young, I managed to get it back to my barracks on the bicycle. I put it up on the wall over the length of my bed. Then I made a holder at the bottom and in the middle to hold a dictionary. The idea was to write out philosophical problems and to work on them in chalk. However I got cold feet and did not use it much. But greatly to my surprise, it was a big hit with the Major and staff when they discovered it during inspection.
