I and a few others were driven via bus to the airport and took a noisy prop plane to DC. We were again picked up and taken by a small military bus to our destinations which for me was Fort Myer, arriving somewhere between one and two in the afternoon. I signed in and was shown to my bunk on the second floor of a typical old wood barracks, of which there were about a dozen. I threw my duffel bag on my bunk, pulled out some civilian clothes, changed and took off. Took a bus to Pennsylvania Avenue, and all that I can remember was that I took a wee-wee in the bushes outside the Capital Building, and got caught by a security guard. When he saw my military identification card he let me go - no problem with an admonition. There was no place to go.

When I got back to my barracks and bunk around eight PM, Whom was waiting for me and my two room mates both from Alabama were also there. Whom was the barracks sergeant and Company Clerk. He was about five feet-eight inches tall, thin, very short cropped hair, an ordinary face and somewhat gaunt. He introduced himself with a smile, a handshake, and a welcome to HQs Company Army, like he and it were the same thing. I would share this, a rectangular room with the two Alabamians who both worked in supply. The walls were makeshift and did not reach the ceiling, and the door was a curtain. But still the whole building had certain aesthetic atmosphere.
