He used the same operation to get himself promoted to buck sergeant, a position that was not allotted to this unit. And he would tell everybody in matters such as this where it was obvious to everyone, what and how he did it. And then assure everyone, that it was perfectly legal and that the institution would accommodate such deviations, if the regulations could take such situations into account.

The ExO was a two-year draftee and he left the army that spring. His replacement was from the North-east, another high scoring graduate, but he was of another stripe all together, fairly down to earth and self-effacing. He seemed an ordinary guy who put on no airs. For some reason which I either never knew or can't remember, they moved his office down to the supply building and moved me by myself into the ExO's office next to the Majors. I remember the new ExO saying he was glad to get down to supply away from the Major and especially Boone. He said every time he went into the main office, Boone was at his desk in the corner mumbling into his phone. He said whatever Boone was doing he didn't want to know, 'cause it couldn't be good.

The office on the landing was now in front of me out the door, and remained with the Duty Roster Clerk, whose job it was, to work the phones all day juggling duties. All the enlisted men below the rank of E6 were to perform specific one day duties above and beyond their ordinary assignments. These would be such as KP in the mess hall, Charge of Quarters as to man the phones all night in the HQs office, and Mess Hall head Count which was to count everyone who came into the mess hall for each meal.
