A Progressive Identity means the creation of Identities based on wants and and the personification of objectives, over and above the Conservative state of the Ego. Progressive Identities are such as singer, sportsman, occupations, traveler, teacher, scientist, weather forecaster, and any any of hundreds of various specialist fields.
The Conservative Ego and Progressive Identities are often antagonistic to each other. Since the Ego is essentially Conservative, a balanced and healthy Identity might also be Conservative, like modest, unambitious simple living. When the Ego and Identity are in harmony it is a Correspondent Identity. The Identity of wedding consulate may
match the individual's natural romantic inclinations. When the Ego and
Identity are in conflict and do not correspond, it is called Conflicting Identity. The Identity of wedding consultant would conflict with clinically depressive personality.
It could be said that much if not most human conflict comes from the clash of Identities. Ego based conflict could be said to arise from real immediate circumstance, involving, frustration, anger, personal friction and frustration, personal animosity and disagreements. On the other hand Identity based conflict may have animosity and conflict built into the very content of the Identity, such as the Identity of soldier, police or judge. Identities that are based on what are thought to be superior idealized attributes, as in opposition to assumed inferior or evil others, will encourage conflict. These are Identity stereotypes, which may be racial, religious, criminal, political or ideological Identities, that override the personal and in the moment Ego.
Since the individual usually has more than one Identity, some particular
one may be described as the
Primary Identity. The Primary Identity is the single Interpretive Context that the individual uses primarily, as a means of interpretation, and that they would identify themselves as, such as by occupation or family name.
