He was married, E4 and lived off post with his wife, and was known to be not the swiftest of intellectual swimmers. He was in big trouble. If he didn't know who did it, he had been asleep - a court marshal offense.
Specialist Morover claimed he hadn't slept and also claimed he didn't know who did it, and he wouldn't budge on that. But even so whoever stole the Jeep had to pass through the main gate of the larger Greek Air Base that was manned by Greek guards. So of course they would know who it was. All this sort of fact and speculation was passed back and forth while we stood in the company street waiting for revelry to begin.
We had a big line-up that morning around ten. The normal working day was suspended and no one went to HQs up on the mountain
except those on Teletype duty - emphasis on everyone except those that had slept off post. They had one of the Greek guards on duty the night before, to identify the culprit. There had been two guards but one had taken sick. Among the men there was speculation of course as to who it was, and rumors were flying all over the place. This was exciting stuff. It was thought to be one or two of the guys from the ordinance unit next door, who-all worked up on the mountain. The thing about this unit was that they were tough and they all stuck together. They were forever organizing boycotts, strikes and protests since one of them was the son of a union organizer from Washington State, who were known in the day as Wobblies. Speculation was they had threatened the guards.
