Finally he assigned men to be scarecrows, and stand out there waving their arms every time a bird approached. Well the upshot was, that the grass never grew, and the field was only used once; and that was when he ordered that the men go out and play a game.
The single most striking event while I was in this unit was the Jeep-affair. There were always two company-Jeeps, convertibles with canvas tops always down, chain locked - steering wheel to the floor, side by side in front of the Headquarters' building. One morning when we came out for revelry at seven in the AM on the company street, everyone was astonished to see that one of the Jeeps was parked where it always was, chained up as usual, except that it was covered with mud and had its wind-shield smashed against the hood, and the side mirrors were broken off. It had been rolled in probably a muddy field. The brass was furious. A few feet away inside the Headquarters building, the Charge of Quarters, who was suppose to stay awake all night, and was in charge of the keys, would know who had taken it.
Whoever stole the Jeep had to have gone into the headquarters' office to get the keys. And when they returned they had to put them back because it was still there. Now everyone pulled Charge of Quarters or 'CQ' by turns except the Teletype guys. I had pulled CQ, and was told by the guys that generally most people stayed awake till two or three AM, and then went and laid down on Major Joinagain's desk in his office in the back, for a few hours of sleep. And that is what I did. In this case the CQ was Specialist Morover.
