The guard, in his twenties was taller than usual, dark and swarthy. He wore the blue Greek Air Force class A uniform and was a low paid enlisted man. He played the role, very serious, power tripping a bit, stopping in front of people and looking at them very hard, which of course scared the hell out of them.
There seemed a collective breath suspension when he stopped in front of the suspect of chief conjecture - but then he moved on up and down the lines very slowly, looking everybody over very closely.
But of course in the end he said through a Greek translator that the perpetrator was not there.
Naturally they suspected intimidation. Then they found some muddy clothes outside in back of the ordinance barracks. Later in the day we each had to be interviewed individually by Major Joinagain in his office. He showed me the muddy clothes and said, "Do you recognize these?" They were a pair of muddy green dungarees and a chequered pastel short-sleeved shirt. I said, "Yea, I thought I saw someone wearing those clothes", and I had. He really perked up at this, maybe thinking finally we will nail this guy.
"But I can't remember who it was", which was also true. And to this day I have never been able to. Of course it would have been suicide if I had, and told. I knew I was treading dangerous ground here. He did not push it. He didn't know me, I being fairly new. Perhaps he thought I was teasing him and didn't want to be made a fool of.
