Just before Quade was shipped home from Greece at the end of his tour, he requisitioned a limousine for the unit and slipped it into a pile of papers for the lieutenant's signing, late on a Friday afternoon. It made it to the boat docks in New York but no further. Someone checked why this limo was needed. Big stink about that, but Quade was gone.
It got to be we hold-overs were having to change barracks quite often and I had seniority by this time. My strategy remained the same throughout this time. After work I changed into civilian clothes and went down to main post to the cafeteria for air-conditioned dinner. Then a movie or some who can remember what? I was checking out a guitar at the main post rec-center to fool around with but really couldn't play it. Some others wanted it but I got there first, so they told check-out that I was ruining the strings and not to give it to me anymore - and they cut me off !
On weekends I sometimes got an overnight pass and went into Louisville, and got chased around by gay guys, if it got to be after dark. They were harmless but could be a hassle. One weekend I went to the central park for an evening of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and saw my first theater performance. After dark it was very warm in maybe September, and I decided to sleep on the stage setting balcony which I did, right in the open with no blankets on the wood plank flooring. And I did it no problem waking probably around seven AM.
