KP again but this time I got storeroom which was pretty easy. Tidy-up and bring in stuff from off the trucks and put it on the shelves all by myself in there. In all army KPs career I never got DRO - dining room orderly the most favored job.

The first week of class and succeeding weeks there were a lot of evening duties. The system was different here. They appointed from each barracks a student as sergeant who gave out the assignments, so the assignees could only get mad at him, and not the company professional cadre. Every evening after we marched back to the company street, which ran between the administrations buildings and the barracks, a company sergeant would make various announcements of interest, and then ask the student sergeants to select some number of guys for the duties of the evening. It became apparent to me that there was a psychology at work there.

It didn't go A to H or J. It seemed to go - I want to be fair here, but I have been close with John so don't think I'll pick him, 'em - let's see, did I pick Gerry last nigh ? Ah well no matter" --- You could read him ruminating on the problem. When he would look at me I could see the dilemma in his eyes. Personally I felt that I had already in basic, pulled enough duties to compensate for the whole of my three year enlistment. So I figured out which line to get into each night on leaving the school, that would end up the back row on the company street. When the student sergeant began to make his deliberations, I sat down on the street. He never saw me and so I saved him the difficulty of the dilemma.
