Guess it was a refuge kind of like a church. I soon got tired of this reading all day, Moby-Dick I know was one book, and discovered a new technique. Holdovers would meet mornings in a room at the Supply Quarters until the truck arrived. One morning I just went into the office where all the sergeants were seated at their desks, and went around and emptied all their waste paper cans like someone had told me to do it. Then I went into the back and began to straighten out and organize the supply stock, shirts, pants, hats, blankets, uniforms and what-not of various sorts. Quade was the guy who would have given me the assignment, and when he found out what I was doing he was quite pleased. He made it my everyday duty. I made him look good and he left me alone. They had a tv in back there, and I was able to watch the 1964 World Series, Yanks and Cards with the sergeants. Not really that much to do actually but just kill time.

Occasionally Quade would have me do some handyman job somewhere on company grounds like repairing a screen. One time he assigned me a helper and we talked philosophy all day. Interestingly when I got assigned to DC, who should be in my unit and became a friend, but this same guy. Quade too was an interesting case. I would eat with him and others in the mess. One day he announced that he had orders to go to Greece. We had a bit of a discussion about that. Again I would end up in the same unit as he when I went from DC to Greece. While there Quade again was in supply. He had a supply officer that he did not like.
