It fed about three thousand per meal. This meant I was going to pull KP again in the first days of my new school, or again the next week. Was good food though.
So it was maybe on a Thursday that I reported to my new unit. They gave me a bunk and said I had missed the start of that weeks class, and would have to wait till next week's, with the coming weekend the Fourth Of July to include Monday. I asked the guys sitting around the barracks for the story and they said, "Just don't hang around here if you don't want to get duty".
So it was on that day that I began my career of hiding. I started walking around the post and found a mixed military, civilian-dependent swimming pool. Spent my weekend there, eating at the main post cafeteria, and generally exploring around the post. At the same time in this period I was broke and had no money. I was walking around looking at the ground and in telephone change slots for money. That was an interesting experience. I wrote home for money but it was to take awhile. Finally a stranger in the barracks lent me some money. Very kind of him and I was exceedingly grateful.
First week of new class pulled KP again the second day. While the other school had been a Company Clerks school, learning all the clerical chores for a given company, the job I studied here, and had enlisted for, was more specialized, such as medical records or working in large headquarters units.
