So after that it was get a job. What else was there to do ? Definite problem in the system though. There were not enough jobs for the number of kids coming along. Tried a drug store. My English tutor tried to get me a job with a local paper but no dice. Finally a woman at church about my age, said I should try MA Miller in Libertyville, where she was a secretary. They needed a shipping clerk. So I asked John who was out of the work most of the time, to drive me over, and then it was decided we would both apply, which we did, only he got the job and I didn't. Don't think I ever got an official Social Security required job by myself in my life, except a Christmas temporary sorting clerk with the US Post Office in San Francisco. After a week or so, because John had a talent for math and book keeping, they created a position for him auditing the stock. So he got me the job of shipping-clerk. John picked me up every morning in his, will call it a '52 green Plymouth, and drove us to work, a distance of probably fifteen miles.
It was a record player needle factory where I would work for two years. Started out as shipping-boy, mostly small packages mailed to individual customers. Their biggest customer was Sears and Roebuck. I sealed up the packages with paper tape, rolled through a wet brush machine to moisten the glue, and dipped a brush in a pot of Water Glass to seal on the address labels. The big packages more-so had to be tied with brown wrapping string.
