Spent the weekend at Gurgieff Headquarters of which I remember not much except that I was in love with a woman who was a student at the Art Institute. Big surprise when I found she was also at the Nyland Hqs in Seattle. People would travel from all over the country and even overseas to hear Nyland give a talk. He was quite idolized. Nyland gave a lecture, I think on that Saturday night, which ostensibly was why there were a lot of people there as well as Wherebe and Whobe. I managed to get a seat next to my love, who was there by herself in the the third row. I was so enthralled with her that I had a hard time concentrating on Nyland, but as I remember I was somewhat disappointed, the content so elemental of a stage that I had surpassed in the first year of my practice of analysis. In fact it was the same stuff one hears from all the gurus one might come across.
Of course these kinds of groups always have secret higher knowledge reserved for members who have advanced through the various ascending stages of development. Hard to say, having never belonged to one of these groups, whether the purpose of the initiate system is some kind of 'bait and switch'. There is forever the idea that people must be prepared for higher consciousness.
There is also the concept that higher knowledge must be secret to keep it from falling into the wrong hands akin to Darth Vader. Personally my philosophy has always been that it doesn't matter, because people can only understand what they can understand when they can understand it. They can choose to wrestle with something new or not.
