The elements in the mountains were body-heat, fire, water, food and shelter and no fooling around, or earth, air, fire and water as the alchemists would have it. If one forgot to bring something one would have to do without. One is totally dependent on the elements of weather. If one is alone and something untoward happens, it can be life or death, or at least then - before the advent of cell-phones and whatnot.
We made it eight days. We went to Marble Mountains many times thereafter, and never did we again have such difficult weather conditions. We stopped in Fort Jones on the way home to get a decent meal. The meal became a custom after our back-packing trips, to get some real food after what was usually a week long trip. I had bacon, eggs, hash browns, toast and coffee on this particular occasion.
