I was for weathering the storm out under a tree and sat down under one, all packed up with my fish. But Sophia was afraid that lightening would hit the tree. I said there are so many trees it would be unlikely to hit this one. She wanted to walk back so that was that and she just took off. She was head-strong and I liked that. My first problem was to keep my feet dry. I had a poncho but nothing for my shoes which were not waterproof. Didn't want to get them wet. I got some sticks and would try to hold the front of my poncho out over my shoes. It was partially successful but difficult. Suddenly lightening began striking close by. We were in an open valley with about five foot high shrubs of some kind. We were in the open walking uphill with lightening striking within a quarter of a mile. I thought this is the craziest thing I have ever done. But at least the cacophony of noise was music to my ears. I loved this kind of stuff. Fortunately we found that these storms were sudden, but didn't last long and blew through with the sun coming out in about an hour.

Another day we hiked over to the Marble Mountain proper. This time we went further north on the Pacific Crest Trail and took a trail down to the north-east side of the mountain. We climbed up onto the marble proper at the base where the trail skirted its way around. This trail was another that led down to the parking lot. Going back up the other way to Pacific Crest you could offshoot that and take a trail out west to Spirit Lake and all the way to the western confines of the park.
