Movements are a gathering of like minded people, that can be from all
around the globe, in some particular place, at some particular time and for some
particular purposes. Movements can be economic, religious, political or cultural. In the last 200 years, there has been any number of movements around the
world. In the 1860's there was a movement of mostly men, from all over the
globe to California for the gold rush. A culture existed in a place like Virginia
City, Nevada, that could be said to fit certain aspects of a movement, by its
shared ambitions and ambiance. Economic movements usually take a
political form, generally as worker organizations. This form of movement has taken place periodically over the last millennium, usually without much success,
at least not until the more recent past couple of hundred years. The period of trade union organization in the 30's and 40's, was a movement of worker rights, that existed in diverse locations and shared the same ideals of higher wages,
improved and safer working conditions, health and retirement benefits. The ideology of communism was and is a movement of the lower classes, worker rights and equality, and to the extent that it is a single orthodoxy, it is a movement or series of movements. Religion also has its movements like the Christians in Roman times or the protestant reformation. The current Falun Gong organization in conflict with the Chinese government is a movement.
In terms of culture, the Renaissance could be said to have been a movement.
In more modern times, there were gatherings of artists in Paris in the 1860s,
the 1880s and the 1920s. In more recent times was the Beatnik and Hippy movements of San Francisco in the '50s and '60s. Movements can be restricted
to specific disciplines such as painting, poetry, crafts, architecture, music or theater. In these cases like minded people may gather is a specific location to meet others of similar interests, learn, teach and influence each other and
practice their art form.
