It has been said that there is not a dime's worth of difference between the Republican and Democratic parties. Actually there is a great deal of difference between them, but contained within specific parameters generally described by the emphasis of both parties on progressive development, ever higher standards of living, Excess and Profit or Humanist ideals, wherein human needs, aspirations and superfluities outweigh environmental integrity. Some of the major differences are (pro and anti) abortion, labor laws, workplace health and safety regulations, government services, environmental protections, social security, Medicare, gun laws or equality under the law. Neither party is interested in the kind environmental regulations and social restrictions that are necessary to ensure the viability of the living existence of the natural world for the long term. This is because the entire US political and economic system is dependent upon progressive dynamics. For instance democratic politics in the absence of population control means that successful politicians must progressively produce more and more of everything such jobs, housing, highways, health care and on and on to be successful and get reelected. Capitalist business may be dependent upon producing profits for investors. Or all borrowed money is returned with interest and a profit to the lender.

It is said that those who voted for the Green Party in the 2000 presidential election caused the election of the Republican Bush and a catastrophe for the environment and environmental movement. It is absolutely true that a vote for a third party takes away a vote from the party of Tweedle-Dumb or Tweedle-Dee. The US political system is everywhere, exceptions perhaps at the local level, totally corrupt. Everyone not of the two party apparatus is shut out. This is because the Capitalist medial, charging immense amounts of money for political advertising, controls who can run for office, limiting these races to only those Capitalists who can afford it, or the two major political parties with the wherewithal to raise enormous sums of money by serving their contributors. And wonder of wonders the public non-profit media is banned from doing any political advertising. This in combination with the 'Winner Take All' non-proportional system of representation, insures the absolute non-vaiablity of anything but two parties, or the largest contributor resources as business and labor.
