He had made a lot of money as an assistant editor working the "Streets of San Francisco" TV show. The way he got the job was he joined the union and paid dues for ten years without getting any work until finally it paid off big-time. Another job John got with friends and he had lots of friends. He was playing basket ball on the weekend and injured his ankle. So on about the last half of the job he was more or less useless, and I had to finish it up plaster and paint, pretty much myself.
Medium height, slightly more than medium weight, soft sweet guy, never angry, comb across hair, oval face. John was an inventor. However his motive or the genesis for his inventions was unique. He knew rich people like the owners of a clothing line Esprit if I remember right. So he invented a soccer ball hat which could be used in a clothing line. Then he would try to sell the idea to them. He was never successful in that endeavor while I knew him.
We also did his apartment which was the standard job except he wanted to take the fire place out. Well what did we know ? It was ceramic rings about four feet high and three feet round stacked one on the another to the roof. We pulled out the bottom and boom ! The building shook. The whole stack came down and bam on the base - Boom ! These rings were heavy. Cracked the ceiling down in the apartment below. So I had to patch and paint that up and maybe some work in the bathroom. We got all the ceramic rings out, but I can't remember the proper method we used after that, so as not to collapse the building. Maybe we used a jack.
