In terms of the idea of government being used as a vehicle to create and
maintain social equity, the degree to which government should regulate
human affairs is what distinguishes the Left from the Right Wing.
Government of the far or extreme Left Wing is called Communism, in which
in theory the means in which government creates social equity is by state ownership of most of the community assets, such as the economic means of production, infrastructure, land and resources, which in conjunction with the control of working conditions, a parity of wage scale for all workers no matter how specialized, free and equal education, health and child care, and affordable or government subsidized necessities and superfluities, all
of which in theory are to be used and distributed in an equitable way.
Because the introduction of Communism opposes already existing hierarchal systems in which most of the assets may be in private hands, land reform
and state take over will not be voluntary. Because force is necessary to introduce and maintain communism against all aspects of hierarchal Elitism, and because all the citizenry are required to sacrifice self-interest for the sake of the whole, or personal and religious freedoms are curtailed, or if the political structure itself is hierarchal and inequitable, Left Wing government is fascist.
If the ideal of social equity is Left Wing and Elitism is Right Wing, then Socialism is middle of the road. The government of middle of the road or
the moderate Left is Democratic Socialism, which is a mix of private and government owned assets, as something between Communism and Capitalism. Where private elitist interests and capitalist economics are allowed and encouraged, the government by taxing the rich and subsidizing the poor, and by perhaps owning outright the industries which produce the elements necessary to
all, as infrastructure, utilities, education, child care, or health, the affect is
to some extent mitigate the division between rich and poor.
