It was a good idea to stay a good distance behind other cars, and the only real problem was stoplights on speed limit sixty miles per hour roads. One would not want to get caught with a sudden light change demanding quick deceleration. So these kinds of lights were cause for a special dispensation and one might find the need of some form of scouting mechanism out in front.
Back - stuck on the freeway to Golden Gate Bridge, I was there about ten minutes, long enough to realize that my question was definitely answered. There was no
push-starting it by hand with a flat tire. But then I was saved by a cone truck. These trucks routinely cruised the approaches and the bridge itself, changing the number of lanes going in or out of the city, depending on the flow of traffic, so that in the morning there might be four lanes coming in and two lanes going out. This could be changed to three and three for the mid-day period, and then around three in the afternoon it might be changed again to four out and two coming in. The cone truck proceeded very slowly since on one side of the truck the cones were pulled up and the other side they were put down, by two guys sitting on the rear, the orange cones having a pin that slipped in a hole in the concrete roadway. The truck came up right behind me. The driver was fat, wore overalls and was driving with one hand, and smoking a cigar with the other. I told him the car would not start. He said he would push start me and that I should drive it off the freeway to a pull off on 19th avenue. The truck had a very large white sign on the roof that said in black letters - PASS !
