I knew a person Sonoma, who could drive to Chinatown for dinner, the most crowded section of San Francisco and get a parking spot immediately and right in front of the restaurant. She had a method for doing this, something involving visualization. Thus when driving without a starter motor, one had to produce or be lucky in finding the requisite parking spot, and the object was the sort of power in being able to do this. Of course one could never stall the motor, and if a mistake was made and one was stalled where simple gravitational inertia was not available, one might have to ask strangers to help push by hand. The ultimate was to be able to get someone in a suit and tie to help push the car or truck or whatever vehicle one was using.
This sort of activity was not confined to starter motors, but could be extended to dead batteries or for that matter no clutch, where the car once started by pushing while in first gear could not be shifted and could not be stopped. If one stopped either for a stop sign or a stoplight the engine, stuck in gear would kill. Thus one had to plan one's route to avoid all stop signs, and one had to get every traffic light green.
No brakes was never a purposeful endeavor. However if it was necessary, the brakes going out, as in one case one hundred and fifty miles from home and no money, then it had to be done. The freeways were a cinch since no stopping anyway. But in any event stopping was not a problem so long as one did not put oneself in a position to have to stop quickly. One only had to down shift through the gears until going very slow and finally use the emergency brake.
