And of course there were dog or sled fights the object to sled side by side and turn the others sled over. With the frozen road some could skate down the hill with the sleds.

The ice broke up in spring, late March early April. Huge ice sheets like continents might begin to drift in open water. One year me and my brother broke off a large thirty by forty foot section of ice and used long poles to push it around next to shore in our rubber boots. This sort of episode took place usually after school when mother was at work, and we were on are own on the island. If she had been home she would not have allowed it.

Another year when I was very young the ice took away a pier from next door upon which was a winter-stored thirty foot inboard motor boat - gone. Years later pieces of the metal pier showed up in the swamp and the inboard motor boat found sunk off shore when a woman jumping off a ten foot jump-off tower on a raft belonging to a summer camp on the east end of the lake, skinned her leg on something, and I was there when my father dove down and discovered the sunken missing inboard.

One year we had real high water when the lake froze very unusual the water usually quite mud exposed low in autumn especially when someone left the locks open down at the west end of the lake. So the neighbors yard was flooded and we could skate right over the grass.
