I had decided philosophically in DC that if my mind could not predict the future with any certainty, then the intellect was not the answer, and so decided to pursue pure experience. Greece was the perfect grounds for this philosophy since I could not understand the language nor did I understand the culture, or for that matter the ruins since I wasn't really interested in historical tourism. Because I couldn't understand the content I learned ambiance, look and feel, taste and smell, shapes and color, the ambiance of the atmosphere, day and night, summer and winter.
Rather than the history of monuments I saw shapes, colors, feelings, location and atmosphere. Rather than talk to people I watched what they did and how they did it. Anybody can say anything but vision tells the truth. I was alone in my meanderings mostly because no one else was interested. However if one is with someone, unless they are known for a long time, one is perpetually distracted in conversation and concern for the other and thus one's awareness is considerably reduced if not outright walking blind.
