He did not like it because he could not be one of the boys, but had to be aloof like the officers core in the military. But he was married and had kids and could use the extra money, so was stuck with it and not happy. But he got used to it.

Across Mission Street was a Volkswagen car repair shop underneath apartments. They owned the corner lot next door south, which was a used car lot. The repair estimator used to J-walk across the street all the time and get coffee in his blue smock, very German looking, a slab face, big belly-gut, good size and heavy, German accent. He never stayed but got his coffee to-go and went back to work with a pastry.

Big bay windows fronting Mission Street. Big window front, big window side angle to the inset door, with a wide bay and big round table on the south side, a two seater table on the north narrow side. There were no windows on the north wall but was windowed on the south-side midway back, Victorian pull-ups. The building was Victorian and the second floor was a law firm in front and the cafe office in back. The third floor was an apartment occupied by a friend of the owners, two nurses and they all three had been nurses at Saint Luke's Hospital, a block over on Valencia Street. Along the south wall outside was a narrow passage way with two person tables and a high wood vertical slat fence so that the car lot was invisible. There was an elevated wood floored patio in back of good size. I almost never sat outside. Sometimes it would get quite crowded out-there on weekends.
