We were the only ones up there. We were where we could see at the same time with a turn of the head, Candlestick Park where the World Series was to start, the whole of the bay and east bay hills, down-town, Golden Gate Bridge and all the way to Marin and Mount Tamalpais. It was a long shaking. Up behind at the very top of the hill was a telephone relay tower. It shook violently with a lot of noise of clanking iron and then a siren went off. I held my ground facing down-town. The shaking culminated in a violent jerk which almost knocked me down. Smoke began to appear over in Oakland and down-town. We thought it was fires. We didn't know it was dust from falling concrete and brick works. We hung around taking in the scene for about twenty minutes. I hadn't noticed that the lights at Candlestick had gone out. I said, "I am going to go home and watch the game". So I went home and found all the juice out. Sonoma said Phy is down-town. He worked in a brick building and maybe we should go down there to see if we could find him.
We drove down Mission Street all the way to First Street. All the traffic lights were out. It was stop and go. There was not much traffic and no waiting at the lights. Mission Street was streaming with pedestrians on the side-walks, and a lot of out-of-place people who would never have been seen there otherwise, walking south in business suits and brief cases. We looked for Phy all along the route
thinking he may be walking home.
