In northern Ireland the wind was so strong I heading west into it for a couple of days, I was having to down-shift into first to get up to 30 miles an hour on the flat, on my way from Dublin to the west coast under the heavy grey clouds and over rolling green hills.

But really I had only one crash - in Norway coming out of Bergen, heading back to Oslo. Same story as that time in France - I went straight when I should have been turning left, and went off the road in soft road-edge pea gravel, and I could not turn, heading for a large jagged rock. So thought I, the best thing to do was lay it down and slide to a stop, but the floor boards unique to a scooter, caught on a rock and flipped the scooter sideways over. There was no damage to the scooter, but the wind-shield got smashed and my ankle twisted. With a wind-shield and the front wall of the scooter, one can ride in the rain without getting wet as long as one keeps moving. An air rush-roof sends the rain right over. So then I had to ride in the rain all day without a wind-shield. I had a rain coat and pants but the rain blew into my face down my neck and up my sleeves. It was tough day.

In the late afternoon and the rain had petered out, I found a place to camp next to a fairly raging river. Being that it was isolated, I decided to camp near the river. The problem was I had to go down a steep embankment of about fifty feet, but that proved to be of no difficulty.
