This meant that he had 'beat it to death' and it wasn't fast anymore. He probably had been driving it with the stuck valve and so it had lost much of its power. So it never was my car. It was always Shepard's car. I took the 409 flag insignia off the front fenders and installed a tachometer, which was really necessary, since the thing 'wound out' to 9000 RPMs in just a few seconds, discreetly hidden down below the steering column. I liked the idea of a 'sleeper'. But I didn't fill the holes and so anyone knowing a '409' says, "Look at the holes. Its a 409. You took the 409 flags off. Who ya think ya foolin'?"
So I had bought unknowingly a freak car.
Tire traction was a problem since when it was 'floored in first', the tires were still spinning at 30 miles per hour. Went to a permanent wide, Firestone snow tire retread, which held up really well. Took the grill out of the front to give it a kind of a mean look. Reset the carburetors with new linkage, because they were not opening up all the way. And put an electric fuel pump in the trunk, replacing the mechanical one, to give it an adequate gas supply.
Used to like to take the caps off the lakes plugs mostly at night, and drive around sounding like four Harleys, not that I did it that often, but once in a while. Used to go to the A and W Root Beer stand in Round Lake, with the girl Car Hops, and everybody would hang out there. Place to show off the car. When I went with the plugs open I had to take certain precautions.
