The Ego would notice for instance, involuntary movements of the limbs and soon learn, by pain as an example, to stop impulse movements that led to pain. It would learn such as the source of food and how to manipulate the body to best serve that purpose. Gradually, control of the body would-be learned, and a conceptional controller in the memory would be established called the Ego or Thinking-I.

Interpretation:

Interpretation is defined as the particular Association one attaches to any given subject. Association means mental and conceptual impressions, images, thoughts, words, sensory feelings or emotional content from the memory, which are attached or compared to any given instance of present sensory reality, or to any present mental activity and thinking. For instance: See dog and possibly associate things like bark, bite, breed or guard. Think dog and maybe associate the dog one had as a child.

Interpretation is the particular Associations one may choose from the the myriad of possibilities available in the memory, which are associated or attached to any given present sensation in present circumstance or present mental activity, like 'seaside' can produce any of multitudinous associations from ocean beach to restaurant.

Automatic Association:

Interpretation as the choice of Association is defined as automatic or volitional selection.

Associational selections are made automatically in lightning speed, which is necessary for instantaneous response to potentially life-threatening or harmful situations, such as one jumped at the sudden appearance of a snake. After the so-called heat of the moment, the Thinker may volitionally select specific associations, perhaps more appropriate to the initial response. The snake is volitionally identified as of a harmless variety by searching the memory.
