YIN/YANG
Bipolar Consequence
and Taoism
Primary feature of Chinese philosophy and religion is the principle of the
duality of opposites called the Yin and
Yang, that represents the activity of the constant and continuous change
inherent in physical reality of all known existence. However this duality
is not considered as
Antagonistic but rather as
Complimentary Opposition. This
positive and negative polarity is in the continuous process of oscillation
that produces all change necessary to existence. These oppositions are given attributes by which they are recognized in reality, a few of which are mentioned
here. Yin represents earth, the receptive, rest, female, passive, dark, cold or mother. Yang represents heaven, creative, movement, male, active, light, hot
or father. The Yin/Yang principle is an essential component of the
I Ching or Book of Changes.
