I take him off the line at four am - on a no traffic night - up to a hundred and twenty in a quarter minute, to the first curve and I brake. My strategy - and this was his gig and a standing invitation, he would race anyone. I drive the road center to not allow him passing, on the narrow curvy with hidden traffic dips. O it would be dangerous - about seven miles to the stop light at the intersection of Highway 41.

He's right on my tail, with a gas station and restaurant each corner and the site of the turn around. Did I not say the race was here and back ! Where I figured the race is determined - the turn around - and he with the sports-like car, a road hugger, and perhaps had driven the rout race style many times, to my would-be first time one.

Say I get to the turn-around first; he has got the sporty, low to the ground u-turn car. I had never made a turn like that. I would have the advantage - acceleration and top speed - but he had the terrain vehicle. To win I would have to U turn first, over dip, dale and curve around, and back into town at speeds of one to one-hundred and twenty.

I never did it - for ten dollars maybe, but not a hundred. Out of my price range - when gas was fifteen cents a gallon.
