Later-Gator - I quit with them. At a Grateful Dead concert in Golden Gate Park maybe a year later there by myself, Miss Antioch came over to chat and tried to get me to come and talk to Mr Antioch. I was rather unforgiving in those days, and told her he could come over here and talk to me. Of course he couldn't; that spoils his game and he has no other to play. He didn't poor boy, and thought himself the enlightened of the Aquarian Age. I didn't stay long.
I think shortly after I moved to North Beach
in August. I met a woman perhaps in September. I don't remember how - somewhere down-town, who turned out was a friend of the Antiochs, and had just arrived in SF to see them, but had lost the address. I took her on the Haight Street Bus from Market Street all the way out there. Did a bit of flirting but mostly conversation. Took her to their door. Then I left without going in or waiting for the door to open. And an even greater coincidence, I ran into her again at a fair in Civic Center the next day. And would anyone believe, after what I had done for her, she seemed distant and cold now.
At any rate I did not exactly make friends in the Haight. I had short hair and moustache, having cut my long hair and beard, from the animosity I received in Illinois, that put Nazis to shame. So what I learned was that the hippies who claimed to be so enlightened, were yes tolerant to their own type of freaks, but just as intolerant to the straights as was the reverse.
