But I was going to remember the decisions I made and perhaps I did. It was a decision I made.

Maybe six of us on bikes that perhaps we borrowed from the younger kids were playing a game of tag on bikes or It UpTown on the wide main street between the train station and the general store. Smitty was It on a warm summer evening and began chasing me. So I fled down a road along the tracks to the west of town and around a block, but he was right on my tail. I took a short-cut thru a yard in an attempt to lose him, cut in thru the hedges and out again, but Smitty mis-judged, and a cut in the hedge turned-out to be a shadow, so crunch he went down. Two older men ran out of the house across the yard after Smitty, who threw his bike over the hedge and squeezed thru after it - running, mounted and began pedaling away kicking at one of the men who were hot footing it after him. He got away.

Back up town we returned the bikes and got into Christo's '57 Ford and proceeded to Smitty's house where we gathered fallen pears to pepper those guys house with. Back UpTown we were proceeding into the turn, down the road along the tracks to their house, and we met in their car coming out - they drunk, and we were squeezed into a cement wall and so scratched the car. A big brouhaha ensued and the county cops were called. They are drunk officer. They have pears see in the car and drove bikes thru our yard.
