I was at some kind of outdoor event down at the Main Library, maybe the Mime Troupe and some guy yells, "We don't need no police!", or maybe he said 'pigs', a common imputation in those days. Others yelled in agreement. Thought I would like to see these morons down on Mission Street with the gun toting store owners one of these nights. In the end after a week or two, some strike maddened cops through a fire-bomb at Alioto's front door to his home. Believe the strike was settled next day.

Maybe a year later when I was living in Bernal Heights, there was a rock concert to be given right in the street somewhere around say 29th and Sanchez. This was just a quiet neighborhood street, little traffic in the middle of nowhere so to speak. The concert was to promote an anti-Vietnam war agenda. We decided to go to it for whatever reason. It was not something we normally did. The stage was set up right in the street extending half way across. Cars could get through on the other side, if indeed there would be any, which there was as I remember maybe one. A lot of people began to show up and the band began to play. The people filled the whole of the street. Suddenly the police tack squad showed up and ran a line of cops right down the middle of the street. Those of us on the stage side of the street were suddenly face to face with young cops who seemed to be half embarrassed to be there. Apparently the police department decided that for public convenience it must be mandatory that half the street remain open to cars. Of course it was ridiculous.
