And so that is what I tried to do on all my backpacking trips since then. But it is hard as I discovered the next morning. Get up around eight. Cook some minute Oatmeal by pouring boiling water over it. Make some freeze dried coffee, sit back and smoke a cigarette. How beautiful. How wonderful. So after
a half hour or so, lets see maybe I should pump some water. Maybe I should go for a walk. Maybe I should start getting ready for lunch. Maybe I should prepare for rain. Maybe I should go fishing. This is how it goes the first day. On succeeding trips the first day is always just as stated.
The second day is a little easier. By the fourth day generally, at eleven in the morning I am saying to myself, "Maybe I should pump some water or start getting lunch together, but naw - it can wait". It is just too beautiful, the light and shadow, the moods of the water, the whispering breezes, the birds and sometimes small animals like chipmunks and squirrels, the girdling of a stream. Once in the thrall of pure beauty, nothing not necessary seems of much matter.
