But on this particular occasion I had announced around that I was quiting sculpture and I remember a stranger at the cafe a woman, tried to talk me into staying with it. I said no I was quiting. There was nothing left to do but make money and I had been refused by a number of galleries with always the caveat - you have promise but your work does not suit our clientel. So I was rude to her. I said no I am quiting and went out in back to play chess.
While I was engaged in my game
outside-back, one of the behind the counter people comes-out, sees-me and says - "Hey your not on the phone !" She had just been talking to the mad phone-caller who had been constantly harassing women for a couple of years then, and every man I knew had been accused of it. I was the current victim then, except how could I be in two places at once - so I was exonerated. Of course no one ever told me to my face that I was victim number fifteen. I was told second hand and threatened on the phone.
Actually I did get a gallery gig. I had a neighbor on Winfield who worked at a gallery. He comes in to my shop one day and tells me he is going to make me famous. Bring my work down. So I was famous for twenty-four hours. The next morning only by coincidence, the Professor's wife was at the coffee house, at our table with a friend who was an artist. It was a rare event that she should be there. So I told them that I had been accepted at this So & So Gallery. The artist it turned out had shown at that gallery and said she couldn't get paid. She had very bad stories about the owner.
