He had a custom car, an early fifties Ford with skirts, custom hub caps and grill, wore slicked-back hair in a duck-tail like all we teen juvenile delinquents, but was a good guy Christian, and was suppose to be a good influence on us, about fourteen boys my age in town, and more Lutherans further afield.

They had what they called paper-drives in those days. People of the community were asked by the church sponsored Boy-scouts to leave outside the door or in the driveway, all their old newspapers and magazines, and we kids as boy-scouts or good Samaratans would come in a big deuce and a half truck and pick this stuff up. The big people would sell it by paper-weight, so much a ton and use the money for equipment and supplies. But the neat thing about it was, a chance to score Playboy and Penthouse magazines with naked women, these magazines we were forbidden with exotic ladies.

To take the sacrament, sin forgiveness after Confirmation was required - bread of the flesh and wine of the blood of Christ. Confession and the forgiveness of sins. One requirement to get confirmed about mid-high-school age, was to read the New Testament. Well who would know ? But I did read it on the honor system. And it seemed to me that most would never pass the confirmation test, without the open book honor system. Fifteen kids in the church basement, and the teacher leaves us the Confirmation final test, the open book honor system, where we were not supposed to but all shared our answers. The church knew it, which is why the teacher left the room. We all knew it and we all got passed in a dishonorable way. But who would know ?
