The distinction is here made between Spirituality and Religion. Spirituality is considered Conservative meaning that the earth plane is considered a spiritual place and state. Thus the pre-existent state of nature is to be preserved and treated with respect. Religion is defined to mean that God is removed from the reality of present earthly existence to the realms of heaven, in which God's existence becomes an abstract concept of the mind, as opposed to present experience, and requires for its existence the substitution of faith that replaces empirical reality. God is changed from a reality in present to a distant authority, that can only command from on high, moral principles and dictates, if he can get one's attention. And of course God is not all that concerned with the earth's domain, doesn't care that it is resourced to wrack and ruin, but only cares that humans become wealthy and happy, and treat each other right in all their social contracts. In fact, in much of the Christian tradition, earth is considered to be an evil place causing the downfall of the human soul. Therefore any destruction done to the present earth, and all its inferior evil domains is all to the good, and can even be encouraged to the greatest degree, ending in a great apocalypse. Evil must be destroyed.

From the conventional point of view, religion can be defined as Conservative or Progressive based on the definition of monotheism. The interpretation of God considered as everything all the time is defined as Conservative, because this attitude encourages a reverence for the natural environment as the given pre-existent state. Conservativism is
prohibitive reflecting a respect for given states whether they are environmental, personal cultural or even religious thus prohibiting to only the degree necessary exploitation.

The interpretation of a single God, but separate from earth encourages a Progressive perspective wherein the present is merely used for the future. The West with its God considered separate from earth, makes possible the separation of church and state. The state handles all the messy compromises of unearthly perfection and earthly material success. The religion handles the ideals of uncompromising perfection. The individual gets to do what they want, so long as they keep in mind that God exists in the future. The greatest reward lies in the future as heaven and thus the here and now is defined as use to that end. Nothing material is sacred. Everything is potentially profane. Since the material world is defined as resource there is not necessarily discouraged any degree of material acquisition.
