If one spent enough money, one could probably learn the necessary compensations for these illusionary artifices, and one might see some older guy with his girl friend, carrying around the giant black and white panda. Or maybe they rigged a few give-aways as come-ons.
Personally I nor my other friends, ever had much money, in most of our teen years because we did not work. However Dicky also known as Baldy was an exception. Ever since he was a little kid he always worked at things like paper boy delivery. And he always liked to spend his money extravagantly.
For instance he would come into Josie's coffee shop, in our small town and put a quarter into the jukebox and play 3 songs, like 'Rock Around The Clock', 'Blueberry Hill', 'Sweet Sixteen' and then walk out without listening to any of them. For me a quarter was 5 candy bars and this sort of extravagance was something I didn't understand. Later on when we were older with driver's licenses, he got a job at the gas station in town. He let us a few times fill up our cars for free, if we got there just at the right time, at about 6:10 pm, when the boss went home for dinner and if the mechanic was not there. Even so we did not suspect why Dicky always had so much money. It didn't occur to us, since we didn't work ourselves, that he spent more than he could have earned, what with the hourly wage at that time for unskilled labor, at between 40 cents and a dollar an hour. We came to find out some time later, maybe in a fit of admission upon his returning home on leave from the Marine Corps, that he stole most of the money he so lavishly spread around.
